Translation Notes

  • 忘不了 translates directly to I can't forget, however we went with How could I forget in some places above for stylistic reasons and to better convey the feeling.

  • Many versions of the lyrics found online use the word worry: 煩惱 (fán năo | ㄈㄢˊ ㄋㄠˇ) as the last word of the second verse.

However, this may be a transcription error- we have chosen to go with the word 繁鬧 (fán nào | ㄈㄢˊ ㄋㄠˋ) instead, which means prosperous and lively, think: a colorful and bustling bazaar.

Both words sounds the same when sung, which may explain the mixup. The latter choice conveys a totally different meaning, and we think it’s a better fit here for two reasons:

    1. In the context with the rest of the song: The second choice allows the sentence to match the pattern of a negative statement followed by a positive statement. This is the prevailing pattern of the lyrics up to that point of the song.

The sentence before it mentions melancholy admist falling leaves, and thus it logically should be followed by a positive: liveliness admist blooming flowers.

    2. In the context of the sentence itself: busy and lively works as a better analogy to blooming flowers than worry.

  • Much is lost in translation despite the simple lyrics. For example, In Verse 3, we have the stylistic: Along the lonely alley, the angled moonlight shines clearly. The cold swing, rocks gently with the present wind. While the context is clear (the singer is wandering sadly around an empty park at night while thinking about their lost love), it misses the parallelism in the lyrics.

If translated literally, it would be the following: The lonely alley, due to the incoming entrance of the angled moonlight, shines clearly. The cold swing, due to the incoming entrance of the prevailing wind, gently rocks. The parallel between the two sentences can be seen with the phrase due to the incoming entrance (而今) in addition to the structure.
