Translation Notes
紅塵 in Verse 1 translates to red dust, but refers to mankind/human society. This phrase draws meanings from Buddhism and from poems in the Southern Chen Dynasty (c. 557–589) as part of the Northern and Southern Dynasties Period.
The “red dust” refers to the dust being kicked into the air from the roads as part of bustling, prosperous human activity, thus representing a society.
渾身是膽 in Verse 3 is an idiom that originates from the Records of the Three Kingdoms (三國志) (c. 220–280 CE). In the Book of Shu (蜀書), Volume 36: Biographies of Guan, Zhang, Ma, Huang, and Zhao (關張馬黃趙傳), a general by the name of Zhao Yun is serving under Liu Bei.
At the Battle of Han River (219 CE), Zhao managed to trick and drive off Cao Cao’s pursuing forces. After arriving to see the aftermath, Liu Bei declared: 子龍一身都是膽也 aka Zilong is full of courage (referring to Zhao Yun). This idiom harkens back to that declaration, describing someone as the ultimate hero, courageous from head to toe.
